Why are MWB series cylinders with a lock shorter in overall length than MNB series cylinders?

MNB series cylinders have a brake shoe and an opening mechanism on the axis, while MWB series cylinders have an opening mechanism on the upper side of the brake shoe to shorten the overall length.
